Since the release of the first iPhone in 2007, Apple tends to control more and more each part of the device. Now, it has reached a far new level as Apple has recently announced that iPhone PowerVR GPU, historically built by Imagination Technologies, a British company, will be replaced by an in house technology.
It is very difficult to build a new GPU from scratch and according to Imagination Technologies, it will be very difficult without infringing upon its parents. So we could pretty much end up with a new massive patent battle or a brand new GPU design next year.
At the moment there are no more information about the new Apple GPU but we should hear about it pretty much soon.
