Post Apocalyptic RPG Sonny now available on Android

Sonny is a post apocalyptic zombie game RPG  developed by Armor Games and released in August 2017 on Android while the IOS version has been released on IOS in January 2017. As the title says, you play as Sonny, and you wake up in a boat saved by Louis, a scientist, who inject you some kind of serum preventing you to turn totally in a zombie.  Now you’re still green with zombie power but you can still talk and think. The boat is surrounded by zombie, and basically, Sonny’s world has been devastated by zombies. First, you will have to get off the boat alive and then go on a journey to uncover the truth, get your memory back and save the world from the zombies.

Graphics

Graphics are cartoon style and colorful.  Everything is fluid and easy to look at. The enemy roaster seems quite diverse as I have encountered already more that 10 enemy types, from the human Soldiers, Suit zombies, Hulk zombies, Walkers, Acid Zombies, etc.. However, animation as limited and the characters are not moving, just sliding toward the enemy inflecting damages. I would have appreciated some movements, such as punchs, kicks, well, whatever giving a bit more action. Long range attacks are a bit different as you do see proper visual effects but consider our smartphones are now becoming portable console, I’m expecting a bit more than just sliding attack.

Gameplay

Sonny is a turn based RPG. You and the rest of your party are on the left side while all sorts of zombies stand on the right side of the screen. Each character have a green life bar and a blue energy bar that regulates the attacks: Its your turn when the blue bar is filled. As a RPG, each fight earn you experience and coins which let you develop new skills and buy items.

Sonny has a bunch of different abilities such as Life Regeneration, which is useful against poison or bleeding. Coupled with various attached such as Quick Strike, Break, Drill Strike, Snap Kick, ….Each of those skills inflict not only raw damages but also a bunch of side effect such as Bleeding, Reduces Healing of Defense. You can also equip Sonny with gears such as helmets, cloaks in order your stats a good boost. You can equip all your team with new equipment, however, only gets to have skills points and new abilities.

Speaking about your allies, they tend to complete your team quite well, at least for the kind of enemies I played against. Always prompt to give you a boost of life when I was focus in using my most deadly attacks. However, they are controlled by the IA so if you get killed, you basically have to rely on their choices to kills the zombies. Also, if you’re applying a -75% defense to an enemy with one of your attack, your teammates won’t necessarily attack this zombie with their most powerful attack, which is a bit disappointing. I globally liked the fights. They are not that strategic but fast paced which was great.

Story

Sonny’s story is pretty straightforward and is actually the only game mode, outside a training mode that let you kill zombies to get XP and Gold. The story starts when Sonny come back from the dead saved by Louis. You are in a boat and you have to escape. Once you escaped via a lifeboat, you reached the world map divided in 8 zones, each with their own zombies. You will also encounter friendly allies that will eventually be part of your party such as Veradux. Then, you will have to uncover the truth about this world and save it from those zombies.

The heroes and enemies interact with dialog boxes and graphic cards and it is pretty well designed.  There are no app purchase nor time limit but you have to watch ads and you can also optin to watch video ads to increase by 20% the XP or Gold earned. Fair enough to me and I didn’t feel it breaks the game and you can get through the story without having to wait for ages for your skill to be activated. It’s very good if you are looking for a budget friendly game that will last for a while with the 8 worlds that Sonny proposes.
